Become A Volunteer
MWIA has a structured process for interviewing and preparing volunteers. All prospective volunteers must download, read and familiarise themselves with MWIA’s Volunteering Policy and selection criteria prior to completing an application.
We encourage prospective volunteers to contact us to discuss the possibility of a volunteer placement before submitting an application.
Selection and preparation takes two to three months depending on the length of the placement. This allows for sharing of information and expectations. Before undertaking their placement, all volunteers must attend preparation sessions which include:
- An introduction to MWIA and Loreto
- Ignatian spirituality and reflection
- Self-care and the ability to self-reflect
- Motivations and expectations
- Cross-cultural challenges
- Development and volunteerism
- Child protection
- Practical matters – what to bring
Step 1: Application
Prepare a resume listing education and employment experiences and send it to us with a completed copy of the MWIA Volunteering Application Form and Code of Conduct. Please also provide MWIA a copy of a Working with Children Check.
Step 2: Arrange an interview
When we have received your application, MWIA will contact you to arrange a suitable interview time.
Step 3: Interview
The interview will take about 45-60 minutes. You will be asked to specify where and when you would like to volunteer so have a think about this before your interview date. Also, it is good to nominate more than one country!
Step 4: Interview follow-up
MWIA will contact you a few days after the interview to let you know if you are eligible for the program. If you accept a placement, we will contact the project partner in your nominated country and secure a placement for you.
Step 5: Organising your trip
If you are successful, you will need to arrange your own flights, visa, medical requirements and, most importantly, travel and medical insurance. You will need to submit to MWIA a copy of your flight itinerary and travel insurance before you depart. MWIA is happy to assist and answer any questions you may have when completing this process.
We do charge an administration fee of AUD$500 (AUD$350 student/concession) to cover your pre-departure preparation and management of your placement. Accommodation and food costs vary according to country and length of placement.
Step 6: On your return
The complexity and pace of Australian life can be confusing and somewhat frustrating on your return home. MWIA is aware of these difficulties and offers support services allowing newly returned volunteers to share stories and debrief on global and local issues with people who understand and can relate to similar experiences.
As a MWIA past volunteer you are now part of our alumni and we hope that you will enjoy the benefits of being part of our international network. We invite you to share your experiences by contributing to our publications, through speaking engagements or attending events with other volunteers.
To apply, please complete a Volunteer Application Form and Code of Conduct and send to:
MWIA Executive Officer, Kim Nass
Mary Ward International Australia
Suite 105, 3 Eden Street
North Sydney NSW 2060
Or email to email@example.com
You will then be invited to attend an interview to discuss your motivations for volunteering, expectations and where you might like to travel to.
Make sure you consider these points beforehand and have more than one location in mind in case your first preference cannot be accommodated.
